Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Canada on December 11 and 12, the Indian High Commission in Ottawa confirmed on Thursday, as New Delhi and Ottawa seek to strengthen bilateral relations.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also confirmed the dates while speaking to visitors at a local restaurant in Calgary on Thursday morning. Carney said he had spoken to Modi and that the visit would include Toronto and Ottawa. “We’ll see if we can broaden it out,” he added.

In a post on social media on Thursday, the Indian High Commission said the two leaders had agreed to build on the recent positive momentum in bilateral ties and pursue concrete outcomes in trade, energy, technology, security and people-to-people exchanges.

The announcement follows a conversation between Modi and Carney on Tuesday, which the Indian prime minister described as “warm and productive”. Both leaders agreed to maintain the positive momentum in relations and advance cooperation across key areas of their strategic partnership.

In a post on X, Modi said India and Canada were working together to contribute to a more stable and prosperous world.

“Had a warm and productive conversation with Prime Minister Mark Carney. We agreed to build on the positive momentum in India-Canada ties and work towards concrete outcomes across key areas of our Strategic Partnership, including trade, energy, technology, security and people-to-people ties,” Modi said.

According to a statement from Carney’s office, the two leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to concluding negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) at the earliest opportunity. The proposed agreement is expected to support efforts to double bilateral trade between the two countries by 2030. (with inputs from PTI)
