Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced financial assistance for the families of those killed in the stampede at the Chorbagan Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata, as well as those injured in the tragedy.
Under the announcement, the next of kin of each person who died will receive ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF). Those injured in the stampede will be provided ₹50,000 each.
The announcement follows the stampede at the north Kolkata Durga Puja pandal on Saturday evening, which left at least 19 people dead and 25 injured, according to reports. The incident reportedly occurred amid a surge in the crowd during rain.
The financial assistance is intended to provide immediate support to the affected families and those recovering from injuries.
