With the cyclone Phailin moving out of Bihar without any major damage and destruction, water level of rivers in the State has started rising following heavy rain in the catchment areas of Nepal. River Falgu too is inundated after a long time.

Bihar witnessed incessant rain for the last two days following the Phailin cyclone which caused water levels of river Kosi, Ganga, Bagmati, Punpun, Mahananda, and others rising. Significantly, the water level of river Falgu in Gaya too has risen after a long gap.

The State Government too has sounded alert in north Bihar districts following the rising level of water in the rivers. The district administration of the north Bihar districts have been asked to take all precautionary measures following the rising water level in rivers.

Though, the local Met department had made forecast of heavy rain during the past 24 hours in North Bihar, reports suggested that the areas did not see much rainfall on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, reports from districts said that at least six people, including two children, were killed in the State following heavy rain and gusty winds blowing across Bihar in the last two days.

The two children died when a tree fell on their house in Vaishali district on Sunday while an old man and a woman died in Madhepura after their thatched house crashed in the gusty winds. Official

sources also said that one person each died in Khagaria and Kaimur districts.

Normal life was badly affected in the State by the heavy rainfall under the effect of Cyclone Phailin since Sunday, said Vayasji, principal secretary of disaster management department. He also declared that all the victim families will be compensated by the Government.

Following Phailin cyclone and heavy rainfall the festive mood of the State was badly hit and even the burning of effigies of Ravana was advanced from Monday to Sunday. It also delayed idols immersion in rivers.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday had held a marathon meeting with top Government officials and directed them to review preparation to deal with the flood threat and assess the situation, especially in Kosi and Gandak areas.

Though, supply of electricity was disrupted in some districts, including Patna for hours, the Government sources said it was to take precautionary measures to thwart any untoward incident during strong winds and rain.

The State Government had cancelled leaves of Government officials anticipating any damage and destruction when Phailin hits the State on Sunday evening.
