The 1979 batch IPS officer, PC Thakur took charge as Gujarat’s Director General of Police on Thursday. The post of Gujarat’s top cop was vacant for almost two months after former DGP Amitabh Pathak died of a massive heart attack in Thailand.

Thakur replaced additional DGP Pramod Kumar, a 1983 batch IPS officer, who was serving as the in-charge DGP from August this year after the death of former DGP Amitabh Pathak. He was the additional DGP prisons from last three years.

Thakur was at a centre of a controversy when the Ahmedabad serial blast accused, allegedly from the Indian Mujahedeen, who was lodged in Sabarmati Central Jail, had dug up a 200-feet tunnel inside the jail premises to escape. The case, probed by the Ahmedabad crime branch, had found negligence and involvement of the jail authorities. He has served 34 years of his service in various posts of Gujarat police at the top ranks.
