Backing demands by the women’s wing of the State BJP, who on Thursday demanded a ban on the screening of controversial film Padmavati in Goa, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar expressed concern about the portrayal of queen Padmavati in the Sanjay leela Bhansali film, while also claiming that screening the film without suitable cuts, could result in a law and order situation in Goa and thereby impact tourism.
The former Defence Minister also said that in his personal opinion, history should be portrayed correctly, or else popular sentiments end up being hurt. “This is the country’s history, where we believe that committed jauhar to protect herself.
Anyway I will not go into what is there actually in the film. That is for censor to look after. My personal opinion is straight that history should be portrayed correctly.
If history is portrayed in a wrong way, then people’s sentiments might be hit,” Parrikar told reporters after meeting a delegation of State Bharatiya Janata Party Manila Morcha, led by Sulakshana Sawant at his official residence in Panaji.
“The other issue is regarding out of this controversy, a law and order problem, which Goa cannot afford in the tourist season. A touristic State has to be peaceful. So we will look into both aspects of it.
As of now, the censor certificate is not granted so will take call after censor certificate is granted, whether they take into consideration all these aspects and edit the film accordingly,” Parrikar also said.
The film starring Deepika Padukone, Ranvir Singh and Shahid Kapoor has been on controversy for several weeks now, with some state’s even banning the release of the film citing law and order and wrong depiction of ‘Padmavati’, a Rajput queen who committed jauhar to
prevent being
captured by the enemy.
