Panel for transparency in corruption-ridden MNREGA on cards

Published on:

To ensure transparency in the corruption-ridden MNREGA, the Government has decided to set up a monitoring committee at the block level too on the line of those at the State and district level.

Besides, steps are also being taken to provide technical aid to strengthen the defunct social audit teams to check the quality of the assets created under the centrally sponsored rural job scheme which guarantees employment to the rural poor.Replying to a query in the lok Sabha, Union Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Upendera Kushwaha, while admitting that corruption was deep rooted in the rural job scheme, said “the panel would ensure constant monitoring of the scheme”. He said that the Ministry would soon issue an order for the formation of the panels at the block levels. The Minister also said that the Government would provide fund to the Social audit teams till 2017 to keep a chek and report the performance of the scheme. Kushwaha replied in negative to a query if there were plans to constitute flying squad team to check corruption which, he said, were not feasible given the size of the country.
