The Assam Police has seized over 300 illegal arms from Assam's Bodoland Territorial Areas Districts (BTAD) so far. Assam Forest and Environment Minister Rockybul Hussain said this on Monday while replying to a question by the Opposition and said that the seizure was made within two years time —2012 to 2014.
There have been a demand from various organisations of the society to seize all the illegal arms from the four districts of the BTAD, particularly after the riot between the Bodos and Bengali speaking Muslim settlers in BTAD and adjoining areas that killed over 100 from both the communities.
“While 289 illegal arms have been seized from different extremist organisations, another 55 illegal arms have been seized from miscreants in BTAD from 2012 till July 30 this year,” Hussain said while adding that the arms includes AK 47, .9 MM pistol, .32 MM pistol, carbine and other hand-made guns.
“While 124 illegal arms had been seized from extremist outfits in 2012, 105 arms had been seized from extremists last year. Till July 30 this year, police and security forces had seized 60 illegal arms from extremists,” he said.
“Similarly, 29 illegal arms had been seized from miscreants in 2012 followed by another seven illegal arms in 2013. This year (till July 30) forces have recovered 19 illegal arms from miscreants,” Hussain said.
