Kerala is redefining digital inclusion. The Kerala Fibre Optic Network (KFON) has surpassed 1,33,158 active connections, turning the state’s vision of universal internet access into reality. Launched under Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s initiative, KFON offers affordable, high-speed internet to every household.
In just over a year, it has connected homes, Government offices and enterprises across the state, including 91,621 Fibre-to-the-Home connections and 14,195 free connections for families below the poverty line. More than 27,000 businesses and institutions now benefit from KFON’s high-capacity lines, giving a major boost to Kerala’s digital economy.
Stretching across 32,000 km of optical fibre, KFON delivers reliable broadband from the Secretariat to the most remote tribal regions. Its open-access framework allows private providers to leverage KFON’s dark
fibre, fostering fair competition while avoiding redundant infrastructure. Through its ‘Connecting the Unconnected’ initiative, KFON has brought e-learning, telehealth and Government services to communities that previously had no digital access.
KFON strengthens Government digital governance by linking Secretariat departments, Legislative Assembly offices, schools and anganwadis. With Category-A ISP and NLD licenses, it is poised for national expansion and states like Tamil Nadu are already studying the model for replication.
Adding to its offerings, KFON operates an OTT platform serving 1,473 customers, with 29 digital services and over 350 TV channels, including Amazon Prime Lite and SonyLIV, starting at RS 444. Surpassing 1.3 lakh connections underscores Kerala’s vision of the internet as a collective right, turning connectivity from a mere privilege into a powerful tool for empowerment.
