Poachers have killed a 22nd rhino in Kaziranga National Park this year so far.One more rhino carcass was recovered from inside the park on Monday and it was suspected that the poachers have killed the animal a few days back inside the famous world heritage site, park officials said on Tuesday.
“Our guards have recovered the carcass on Monday from Agaratoli range of the park. It is a case of poaching as the carcass bore bullet injuries. The killers have also taken away the horn,” said park director NK Vasu.
It must be mentioned here that over 30 rhinos have been killed in Assam this year including 21 in one of the highly secured Kaziranga National Park, three in Manas National Park and one in Pobitara Wildlife Sanctuary.
The Assam Government had taken up slew of measures, including amendment of the Wildlife Forest Act 1972 so that the poachers can be awarded life sentences, and further allowing the forest personnel to use firearms and equipping them with sophisticated weapons, to match the firepower of the poachers. However, poachers seem to have been on a spree, killing the one-horned rhinos at will.
