In yet major another spike in infected cases in Mumbai’s Dharavi, one person died and as many as 68 persons tested positive for corinavirus on Wednesday, taking the total number of infected cases in Asia’s biggest slum to 733.
A day after as 33 more persons tested positive for Covid-19, Coronavirus claimed one life taking the total number of deaths to 21 and left 68 others infected in various parts of this densely populated slum.
A maximum six positive cases were reported from Matunga Labour camp, while five new infected cases each were recorded in transit camp, Kumbharwada, Indira Nagar and 90 feet road area. Among the infected persons was a 90-year-old woman from Kumbarwada. Three cases each were reported from 60 feet road area and Dharavi PC.
With 68 fresh cases, the total number of positive cases has risen to 733 in Dharavi. Dharavi has witnessed substantial number infected cases in Dharavi for the past five days.
On Tuesday, 33 new positive cases were reported from Dharavi. On Monday, there were 42 new positive cases of Covid-19. On May 3, Cornavirus claimed two lives and left a record day’s tally of 94 others infected in this slum. On May 2, Dharavi recorded as many as 89 Covid-19 positive cases. On May 1, there were 38 new cases. Earlier on April 23, one death and 25 cases had been reported from Dharavi in a single day.
Dharavi is one of the Coronavirus hotspots in Mumbai. Spread over 240 hectare area, this slum is home to more than 4 lakh people. Ever since first few cases of Coronavirus were reported in the early first week of April, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is closely monitoring the situation in Dharavi where the health authorities have clamped a total lockdown.
Till Tuesday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) screened 83,500 people in Dharavi. “Till yesterday, as many as 2380 people are in institutional quarantine, while 196 people were discharged from various hospital after full cure,” a senior BMC official said.
