Omar to go into hibernation if BJP gains majority in J&K

Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has mocked over BJP’s claims to form the next Government saying he would go into political hibernation if such a development occurs.

“I will retire from the politics and go in hibernation,” Omar said when reporters asked him to comment on BJP’s claims that it would get majority in the upcoming Assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir. Earlier speaking at a public meeting at Chadoora in central district Budgam, Abdullah fired fresh salvo on Opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) blaming it to be the “biggest hurdle in bringing socio-economic and political transformation in the State”.

“The lust for power makes PDP to cross all limits in selling the interests of the State and its people”, he said. He lauded his father Dr Farooq Abdullah for tabling a document on Internal Autonomy in the State legislature and passing it with three-fourth majority. He said the document of Autonomy was sought to address aspirations of people and address long-pending political issue of Kashmir and restore the powers and authority to the people which were eroded during the period of people in power like Mufti Mohammad Sayed.

“The aim of restoration of Autonomy to the State was to empower Jammu & Kashmir to take all major decisions for inclusive development and economic welfare of the State and restore its dignity and self-governance”, he said and reiterated that PDP was created to manoeuvre scuttling of the demand and keeping the State in the standstill situation.

The Opposition blames the NC of surrender over the autonomy issue when the NDA Government led by AB Vajpayee summarily rejected the resolution passed in J&K legislature in 2000. Omar Abdullah was Minister of State in the Vajpayee Government then.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the function, Omar said that his party has not decided on the issue of pre-poll alliance with the Congress. However, he said the workers and activists of both the Congress and of the NC raise voices in favour of contesting the elections separately. He said that Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad should have met with Mufti Sayeed openly rather than holding secret meetings.
