Animal rights activists across Kolkata on Monday erupted in anger demanding strictest police action against the accused after 17 puppies, including their plausible mother were literally bludgeoned to death by two most unlikely persons — nursing interns in one of city’s leadingmedical colleges.
Video clippings apparently taken from inside an adjacent dental medical college hostel at Sealdah in North Kolkata showed two nursing interns ruthlessly clubbing the puppiesthat whined helplessly.
The footages showed the perpetrators of the crime jamming the escape route before repeatedly attacking the hapless canines with sticks and blocking their ways whenever they tried to retire to safety.
After each assassination the accused examined them before slipping them inside plastic carry-packs and throwing them away.
Postmortem reports cited internal injuries as the cause of deaths of the poor dogs most of which were found with broken limbs and fractured skull, sources said. Initial suspicions of the litters being poisoned being poisoned was also ruled out by the autopsy report, sources said.
“We were on the third fourth of our building and were yelling relentlessly from our side asking the ladies to stop the act. But as we could not go to their side of the campus we decided to take video shots for the benefit of some NGOs,” said one of the dental college students.
Another of his colleagues said “After there was no reply from the NGOs we uploaded it in Facebook and saw it going viral within hours.”
Meanwhile, Jayanti Ghosh an animal rights activist and a lawyer demanded strictest possible action against the perpetrators of the crime even as Kolkata’s civil society erupted in great anger demanding exemplary action.
Surojit, a Bangla playback singer, said, “I cannot see it happening even on the Net. Such a ghastly act. If they had problems with the puppies then they could have reported it to the authorities or even the Corporation. Why murder them and that too so mercilessly.” Cases have been registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and Prevention of Corruption Act and “those found guilty would be strongly dealt with,” police sources said while the NRSMC authorities said the interns would be rusticated if the allegations brought against them were found to be true.
