Taking cognisance of the complaints of Noida residents against increasing population of stray dogs in the city and frequent dog bites, Noida authority on Tuesday increased the budget of Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) to Rs10 lakh per month so that dogs can be sterilised.

The increase in the amount came after the SPCA petitioned the authority top brass. The money would be used to provide medical facilities to the canines. Besides, Noida Authority has sanctioned the demands of equipment to run OPDs and operation theatre for stray animals. Also, Authority is ready to pay SPCA for every dog’s vaccination.

Chief Executive Officer of Noida Authority Rama Raman took the decisions in a review meeting with SPCA officials on Tuesday.

Deputy Chief Executive Officer (DCEO) of Noida Authority Saumya Srivastava said the authority is ready to agree to the demands of SPCA but they will have to minimise the complaints related to stray animals. “We have given a target to SPCA to sterilise at least 200 stray dogs per month and NOIDA will pay them,” DCEO said.

“CEO Rama Raman has sanctioned Rs10 lakh/ month to SPCA to provide medical treatment to stray dogs found in Noida after repeated complaints of pet lovers,”  DCEO added.

Earlier, NOIDA had sanctioned Rs5 lakh for stray dogs’ sterilisation and vaccination. “Authority has constructed a new Operation Theatre (OT) to conduct sterilisation of dogs but equipment are not yet available there. We have sanctioned the demand of equipment to run OT and OPD for stray animals by the SPCA,” DCEO said, adding “We will also construct residential premises for SPCA’s official in their centre.”

Anuradha Dogra, member of SPCA management committee told The Pioneer, “We had been reeling with the problems to conduct rescue and treatments of stray animals in Noida but now the problems have been resolved. SPCA will now be able to protect stray animals.” SPCA, at present, is treating 880 dogs and 170 other stray animals in Sector-94, Dogra said.
