Noida Authority on a sticky wicket to find proper sites

Noida Authority is facing difficulties to find suitable locations for relocating around 300 mobile towers out of residential areas. Authority is under extreme pressure following the order of Allahabad High Court. To save people from high radiation and its consequences, the court has directed Noida Authority to shift the mobile towers to isolated locations from populated areas.

In a meeting, the senior officials of Noida Authority planned to start relocation drive of mobile towers from mid of the month but the officials have yet to make proper guidelines to shift the towers without any hassle. Following the court's order last year, Greater Noida Authority had relocated nearly hundred such antennas to green belts. Now Noida Authority has approached Greater Noida Authority and has urged to share the guidelines so their move could not hit connectivity.

According to the survey conducted by the Noida Authority and city police, it was found that out of 600 mobile towers, 300 towers are running illegally from the roofs of the residential units. 20 per cent towers have been illegally installed over the institutional and hospital buildings. The officials also found as many as four towers on some buildings, situated in the city causing severe diseases and health related problems to the residents of the city.

To avoid such problems, Noida Authority had sealed 200 towers in residential areas in 2010 and ordered mobile tower operators to stop installing new towers in residential areas. The move of the authority was stopped last year when court asked the Authority to shift the towers from populated places to isolated locations rather than sealing them.

An official said, as they have to work on guidelines issued by the court, it is very difficult to identify proper sites for relocations.
