DMK chief M Karunanidhi denied reports in a section of the media that his party was holding talks with DMDK led by actor-turned-politician Vijajayakanth for the upcoming lok Sabha elections.
When asked what was the status of DMK’s negotiations with the DMDK, the 91-year-old former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu said on Thursday that no discussions had
been held with Vijayakanth. “No talks had been held. So there is no question of any improvement,” Karunanidhi told reporters.
Though the DMK chief denied reports about discussions with the DMDK to cobble up an alliance to fight the lok Sabha elections, sources in both the DMK as well as the DMDK had told that discussions were progressing.
Karunanidhi himself had told recently that he would love to have the DMDK with him for the elections. He did not hesitate to publicly rebuke his Madurai-based son MK Alagiri who criticised DMK’s move to form an electoral alliance with the DMDK. Karunanidhi had warned that whoever criticises the party line, howsoever high he may be would face disciplinary action.
Vernacular media had reported about the meetings between Stalin, Karunanidhi’s second son who is the chosen heir of the nonagenarian leader, and Vijayakanth for forming an alliance. There are reports that the DMK would not hesitate to offer the lone Rajya Sabha seat which the Opposition could win from Tamil Nadu Assembly to the DMDK.
