No Government can prevent rapes: Gaur

Published on:

The Madhya Pradesh Home Minister, Babulal Gaur on Thursday appeared to have landed himself into a major controversy by saying that no Government can prevent a rape and action can be taken only after the act is committed.

The Minister told reporters at his residence that action can be taken only, when the matter is reported to the police. He further said, “This (rape) is a human perversion. No one informs others before committing a rape, so that he can be apprehended. We can prevent someone (from driving) without a helmet on the streets to prevent accidents. There is no info about a potential rapist. It happens in an isolated area.”

Gaur’s statement was immediately criticised by the Congress whose senior leader, Manak Agrawal said that Gaur seems to be protecting rapists rather than women.Agrawal also said that following this statement, Chief Minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan should remove Gaur from the State Cabinet. Another Congress leader, laxman Singh also echoed Agrawal’s view and said that there was no way in which Gaur can be allowed to continue in office.

Gaur also said that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and Samajwadi Party Supremo cannot prevent rapes. The duo, he said can take action only against those who indulge in rape.Meanwhile, later in the evening, the Mahila Congress activists of Bhopal reached Gaur’s residence and threw bangles. later, the women were dispersed by the police personnel present at the bungalow.

Terming the statement of Gaur as fateful, State Congress chief spokesman KK Mishra said that it was disgraceful for the women. It would have been better that instead of commenting on crimes of other States, Gaur concentrated on the crime rate of Madhya Pradesh. In Madhya Pradesh, in an average 12 women are getting raped and Gaur is trying to shirk the responsibility of this gruesome fact, Mishra added.
