Nitish demands Gandhi, Buddha names in Bihar Central varsities

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday requested Vice President Hamid Ansari and lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar to use their good offices to name the two Central universities of Bihar after Mahatma Gandhi and Gautam Buddha. The two Central universities would be coming up at Motihari in West Champaran and Gaya, the places famously identified with these two legendary personalities.

“lord Buddha had attained enlightenment at Bodh Gaya and Motihari in West Champaran has been the political launch pad of Mahatma Gandhi so it will be most appropriate to name these Central universities after them,” urged Kumar before the Vice President and lok Sabha Speaker present at the first convocation of the Central university of Bihar.

Kumar also requested both the dignitaries to use their good offices with the Central Government for this. The Bills related with both the Central universities are expected soon.

Earlier, over the question of opening the Central university in Bihar there was a long drawn spar between both the Bihar Government and the Union Human Resource Development department. The Bihar Government had wanted the university to be

placed at Motihari but the Union HRD Ministry rejected the venue citing various reasons as lack of infrastructure and communication for students and faculty members.

The Union HRD Ministry wanted to open the Bihar Central University at Gaya instead of Motihari. But, later, it was decided that the State will have two Central universities: One at Motihari and other at Gaya.

“In this way the tiff between us proved beneficial for the State as we got two Central universities instead of one,” said Kumar at the convocation ceremony.

The Chief Minister also said that in Bihar there has been Chanakya National law University and Aryabhatt Knowledge University named after the iconic luminaries “so it will be appreciative if these two Central universities too are named after Mahatma Gandhi and Gautam Buddha”.

The State Government has already allotted Rs 200 crore for acquiring about 300 acres of land at Motihari for the Central university. In Gaya, the Union HRD Ministry has identified the land belonged to the Defence.

“Now there is no problem for land to open the Central universities at both the places,” said Kumar.

Vice-President Hamid Ansari and lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar too addressed the students at the convocation ceremony.  Altogether 156 students received graduation degrees on the occasion.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Janak Pandey highlighted academic and other activities of the university that came into being in 2009.
