Nirmal Yadav to be tried in cash-at-door scam

The Supreme Court on Friday cleared the decks for the prosecution of former Punjab and Haryana High Court judge Nirmal Yadav in the cash-at-door scam.

Yadav had approached the apex court in the hope of getting stayed the trial proceeding against her, which is presently at the framing-of-charge stage. The bench headed by Justice Hl Dattu found no reason to interfere with the trial and declined to entertain the petition. The Court took exception to the former judge’s attempt to delay the case by filing multiple petitions in various courts. Yadav’s lawyer submitted in Court that there was no evidence made out.

The controversy erupted when a sum of Rs 15 lakh was delivered at the residence of Justice Nirmaljit Kaur, another judge of the high court on August 13, 2008. The matter was reported to the police by the judge’s peon and on investigation, the Chandigarh Police discovered that the money, allegedly meant for Yadav, was wrongly delivered to Kaur due to confusion over their names.
