Women lawyers practising in Supreme Court have filed a petition seeking action against two lawyers who made derogatory remarks against woman in the Nirbhaya documentary released by BBC worldwide.
Hurt by the statements made by the two lawyers — Manohar lal Sharma and AP Singh — the women lawyers under the joint banner of Supreme Court Women lawyers Association sought action to be initiated against them by the Gender Sensitisation Committee of the Supreme Court and even consider restricting their entry in the apex court.
The petition comes at a time when both Sharma and Singh are facing possible disciplinary action by the Bar Council of India, which has served them notices for their comments.
The petition by SC women lawyers said, “The present petition is necessitated due to the ignominy and the direct attack on the dignity of women, especially women lawyers practicing in the Supreme Court of India, who have suffered due to the statements made and publicised by two male lawyers, and specially the Respondent No. 1 (Sharma), who regularly practices in the Supreme Court.”
The comments were made in interviews in a documentary titled “India’s Daughter” as they represented the accused in the Nirbhaya gangrape case.
