Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Sandeep Chaudhary said that in view of eradication of filariasis, it has been decided to run night clinics due to formation of very less blood platelets relative to the target.
For this, the CMO directed all the medical superintendents and medical officer in-charges to nominate senior lab specialists and health workers in the centres and organise night clinics and make sure to send its weekly report to the District Malaria Officer’s office. Along with this, all health centres, ASHA and Anganwadi workers and health workers were directed to spread wide publicity to check for filariasis and ensure that possible patients from their area get tested.

Apart from this, on every Thursday, the patients will be examined at Filaria Control Unit located in the premises of Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital, Ramnagar. The time of examination at all the centres has been fixed from 7.30 pm to 9.30 pmm” he said, adding that an IDA-MDA campaign was launched in Varanasi district from 2018 to 2021, in which the target population was fed medicine to prevent filariasis. Along with this, a transmission assessment survey was conducted in the year 2022, in which the rate of microfilariae was seen to be less than one percent. As a result, Varanasi is making continuous efforts towards eradicating filariasis, Dr Singh said.
According to him, due to the bite of Culex mosquito of filariasis, there is a problem of fever, itching in the body and pain and swelling in and around the genitals of men and women’s breasts. Swelling of hands and feet, swelling of testicles (hydrocele) are also symptoms of filariasis. However, symptoms of filariasis appear five to 15 years after infection. Therefore, any person who shows possible symptoms, must immediately get the filariasis test done in the night clinics operated at the nearest PHCs/CHCs. For any further information related to Filaria, one can contact on his number 9415287360 during working days, he added.
