NIA raids five locations in Bandipora in JeI terror funding case

Continuing with its money laundering probe into Jamat-e-Islami (JeI) terror funding case, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday conducted searches at five locations in Bandipora.

On Sunday, the agency had conducted searches at 56 locations in 14 districts of Jammu and Kashmir.

“Today, in continuation of the searches conducted against JeI yesterday, NIA, along with J&K Police and CRPF, conducted searches at five places in district Bandipora,” the agency said in a statement.

Searches conducted on Monday included the premises of office bearers and members of the proscribed association, JeI. During the searches, various incriminating documents and electronic devices were seized from the premises of the suspects, it said.

The searches were conducted at 56 locations in Srinagar, Budgam, Ganderbal, Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora, Anantnag, Shopian, Pulwama, Kulgam, Ramban, Doda, Kishtwar and Rajouri districts of the Valley.

Besides the premises of office bearers of JeI and its members, those of the offices of trusts purportedly run by JeI were also searched.

The case was registered by the NIA on February 5 this year following an order from the Union Home Ministry relating to separatist and secessionist activities of JeI, an unlawful association under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, even after its proscription on February 28, 2019, the agency has said.

The members of the banned outfit have been alleged to be collecting funds domestically and abroad through donations particularly in the form of Zakat, Mowda and Bait-ul-Mal purportedly to further charity and other welfare activities  but these funds are instead being used for violent and secessionist activities.

Such funds were also being channelised to banned terrorist groups like Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM), Lashkar-e-Tayabba (LeT) and others through well organised networks of JeI cadres.

JeI has also been motivating impressionable youth of Kashmir and recruiting new members (Rukuns) in Jammu and Kashmir to participate in disruptive secessionist activities.
