In a shocking incident, an infant boy and an infant girl — one-day-old twins — were found killed with their throats slit at Kolahalamedu in Kerala’s Idukki district. The mother of the twins has confessed to the police that she herself had killed them.
Bijeesha (23), mother of the twins, told the police that she had killed the newborn twins by slashing their throats with a knife immediately after delivery as she and her husband Praveen did not want children so early in life. Police, who are not convinced fully about her confession, have taken Bijeesha and Praveen into custody.
The incident came to light after Bijeesha approached the gynecology department of the Government Medical College Hospital in Kottayam with Praveen on Thursday evening complaining about bleeding following natural abortion. The doctors who examined her, however, found that she had already gone through delivery.
In the questioning that followed, Bijeesha admitted to the doctors that she had already delivered twins. The couple’s relatives brought the bodies of the one-day-old twins to the medical college hospital on Friday. According to the police, Bijeesha had kept the infants’ bodies hidden in the bathroom of their house.
Bijeesha was presently undergoing treatment under the custody of the Kottayam Police while Praveen was taken to the Peerumedu police station, under the limits of which Kolahalamedu fell. The police think that Praveen could have taken part in the abominable crime. Neighbours said that Bijeesha and Praveen did not have much contact with them.
Bijeesha and Praveen, who had been living together for the past one year, had got married only the other day at a community marriage function. “I was not aware of her pregnancy. She had even told the doctors that she had not informed me about it,” Praveen told the media at the hospital.
Meanwhile, the Kochi Police on Friday arrested a man for brutally beating up his 18-month-old granddaughter. Joy, the grandfather, admitted to the police that he had beaten up the child for disobeying his orders and climbing up a window in the house. The incident came to light after a neighbour got the girl, Dhana Mary, admitted to the hospital after seeing her in a serious condition.
In another incident, police arrested a woman at Kulathooppuzha in Kollam district for branding her six-year-old son with a red-hot iron spoon for taking Rs10 from the house without her permission to buy sweets. The woman was arrested on the complaint of the grandmother of the child.
