New law to let only 3 parties to hold rallies in Kolkata

Giving a clear indication that the Mamata Banerjee Government has forgotten nothing and learnt nothing from the severe judicial jolt they suffered at the hands of the BJP by disallowing them to hold the November 30 rally at Victoria House Crossing here, the Kolkata Metropolitan Corporation currently ruled by the Trinamool Congress were at the threshold of bringing out rules throwing out all but three political outfits from holding rallies in three given points in the megalopolis and that too only on three given days of a year.

The parties that would be allowed to hold rallies were Trinamool Congress at Victoria House Crossing on July 21, the day that it observes as Martyrs’ Day, Forward Bloc on 23rd January at Netaji Subhas Bose’s statue apparently because Bose was the founder of the Bloc and the CPI(M) on August 31 at Sidu Kanho Dahar, a place opposite Governor’s House where it has been holding an yearly rally for many decades.

All other parties had been kept out of the scheme of rallies and “no letter for permission would be considered henceforth for rallies other than the ones that would be mentioned in the rules” a KMC official said quoting a resolution taken in the Mayors-in Council meeting. Mayor Sobhan Chatterjee or other MiCs however remained non-committal about the development.

State BJP president Rahul Sinha said, “the BJP is not at the mercy of the Trinamool Government to hold its rallies. This Government was compelled to give permission for the November 30 rally as the High Court made them do so.”
