India has assured Nepal that it will conduct a fair and impartial enquiry into the death of a Nepali citizen allegedly killed during a firing by Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).
During his meeting with Nepal's Deputy Prime Minister Bimalendra Nidhi, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said any incident that takes place, even unknowingly, should be settled through joint inspection and investigation by the representatives of the two sides.
It is alleged that a Nepalese citizen was killed on March 9 when the SSB opened fire following a dispute over construction of a culvert on Sano Khola river along the Indo-Nepal border in lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh.
However, the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu denied any firing by SSB personnel deployed on the Indian side of the border.
Nidhi told The Pioneer that he has shared the post mortem report of the victim with India.
It is understood that Singh conveyed that India would like Nepal to join the enquiry into the incident. Singh also sought regular meetings between border guarding force SSB and its Nepalese counterpart Armed Police Force (APF) for better coordination.
