NCW questions women's safety in West Bengal

Crimes against women have increased, according to National Commission for Women Chairperson lalitha Kumarmangalam, who on Monday led a three-member NCW team to Enayatpur in Mograhat area of South 24-Parganas district where a 14-year-old girl had been missing since May.

Even as her visit was dismissed by the State Women’s Commission as “politically motivated,” Kumarmangalam said, “She had received sixcomplaints on atrocities on women in the past nine months and repeatedly written to the State to take action but there has been no improvement.”

The State BJP had been protesting for the last five days at Magrahat demanding the arrest of Babusona Gazi a local tough who had allegedly abducted Tuktuki Mondal. Gazi and his cronies are known Trinamool Congress workers.

A fact finding team of the BJP comprising MJ Akbar, Arjun Singh Meghwal and Saroj Pandy had earlier visited the area and were likely to submit a report to party President Amit Shah.

Till now no action has been taken to recover the 14-year-old girl even after Subhas Mondal a daily wager and the father of the victim approached State Chief Secretary, alleged local residents, adding, “The Mondals had to flee the village in fear of Gazi’s men who had been constantly threatening them.”

Meanwhile, State Women’s Commission chairperson Sunanda Mukherjee refuted her NCW counterpart’s observations saying “her statement seems to have a political angle.”   She said, “It will not be right to say that only Bengal was facing the problem.” Also, she said “it is not true that nothing has been done to improve the situation in the State.”
