The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has released a 20-hour introductory module on computational thinking (CT) and artificial intelligence (AI) for students in Classes 9 to 12, aiming to strengthen their critical thinking and problem-solving skills and promote the responsible use of technology.

Developed in consultation with IIT Madras and IIT Jodhpur, the activity-based module introduces students to AI applications in everyday life, how machines learn from examples, how to identify deepfakes and the importance of protecting personal data.

Designed for students with no prior knowledge of AI, the module aims to help them understand how AI systems work, evaluate their capabilities and limitations, and use the technology responsibly rather than accept its outputs without verification.

According to NCERT, the module introduces computational thinking as a systematic approach to solving problems. It also explores AI applications, possibilities and limitations through discussions, practical exercises, experimentation and reflection.

The activities can be conducted with or without digital devices, allowing students from diverse school settings to participate.

The module places particular emphasis on the ethical and safe use of AI, covering data privacy, misinformation, fairness and digital safety. It also encourages students to critically assess information generated by AI systems.

NCERT said the initiative seeks to develop informed, confident and responsible technology users while reinforcing the importance of human judgement, creativity and ethical responsibility in learning.
