An internal Army report, claiming that the secret service funds were misused by the Technical Services Division (TSD) of the Military Intelligence during the term of former Army Chief Gen VK Singh to destabilise the Omar Abdullah Government, on Friday kicked up a political storm in Jammu & Kashmir with the National Conference seeking a judicial probe headed by a sitting Supreme Court Judge to ‘unravel’ the game plan.
The Additional General Secretary of the party, Mustafa Kamal, younger brother of Union Minister Farooq Abdullah, also demanded resignation of State Agriculture Minister Ghulam Hasan Mir as his name also figured in the Army report for having received a sum of Rs 1.19 crore to engineer a change of Government in J&K.
Throughout the day, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah maintained muted silence over the allegations but late evening provincial president of the National Conference DS Rana, considered a close aide of Omar, described the charges as serious in nature and a blot on the democracy. “If true, the unfortunate disclosures have the potential of alienating the people of Jammu & Kashmir, Rana said addressing a Press conference in Rajouri.
Targeting the ex-Army chief, the provincial president recalled the horrific incidents of 2010 wherein scores of young people were killed mercilessly in Kashmir and wondered whether these were part of Gen Singh’s game plan to destabilise the Omar Abdullah Government. “We had forgotten the miseries of 2010 but the revelations have opened up the wounds again,” he said.
Earlier, Mustafa Kamal had demanded resignation of GH Mir on moral grounds pending through probe into the matter. Though GH Mir has labeled these allegations as ‘baseless’ but he should immediately meet the Chief Minister and tender his resignation on moral grounds till the time thorough probe gets over, said Dr Kamal. “I am sure he will never offer his resignation. Mir is power hungry and is firmly saddled in his chair”.
