Navratri turned tragic in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior after a truck ploughed into devotees heading to Sheetla Mata Temple early Sunday, killing 12 people and injuring 27 others, according to the latest reports.

The accident occurred around 1.30 am when a truck loaded with paddy, coming from the Chhinor side, reportedly lost control on a steep stretch of road where heavy vehicles are restricted. The truck broke through police barricades, struck devotees gathered along the road and crashed into the temple’s entrance gate and outer wall.

The impact damaged the temple entrance and nearby prasad stalls, while some people were reportedly trapped beneath the debris. Police said 39 people were taken to hospital, including the 12 who died. Five to six of the injured were reported to be in critical condition. Two police personnel on duty at the site were also injured.

Authorities are investigating how the truck crossed the barricades despite restrictions on heavy vehicles. A preliminary assessment cited by police suggests a possible mechanical failure, and a technical inspection of the vehicle has been ordered.
