On the much-awaited day of the Delhi Assembly election, several voters were taken aback. The day turned out to be full of hassles and resentment after a huge chunk of voters complained that despite having a voter ID card, they could not vote as there names were scrubbed off the voters’ list of the Election Commission. They further claimed that despite they had voted in last MCD elections in Delhi, this time their names did not exist in the electoral rolls.
Voters in the east-zone of Krishna Naga and laxmi Nagar were extremely disappointed and even got into a scuffle with the officers on duty after they were turned down from the polling booths. Residents who have been living for over 20 years in the area were shocked to know about their missing names from electoral rolls. “This is ridiculous. We have been voting for so many years. Even last year we voted during MCD polls. How can we are not be a part of the electoral rollIJ” said an infuriated resident of Krishna Nagar.
In Ambedkar Nagar also the scenario appeared similar. A couple that went to cast vote stood annoyed after one partner was refused the right. “I have voted but my wife’s name is missing from the list. We have the election cards with us,” said a voter.
Shockingly, 7000 voters from G-point Kalibari Basti in the New Delhi constituency were reportedly missing from the electoral list despite holding valid voter ID cards. At their wit’s end for not being on the electoral roll the voters despite being long time residents of the area. “Only 10-15 of us could vote rest had to return home without voting,” said a resident. Incidents were also reported from Greater Kailash-2 and Dwarka Sectors 7 and 8 where nearly 50 voters were dumb-founded after finding their names missing from the list. The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) admitted having received the complaints from voters residing in south Delhi area and said that a detailed investigation will be carried out.
