Anti-talk faction of the United liberation Front of Asom (Ulfa) has set a deadline of six months for the BJP led Government in Assam to change the names of schools and colleges named after ‘imported’ Indian leaders with the iconic leaders of Assam and warned of action against those who defy the appeal.
The faction’s statement came at a time when the BJP led Government has been drawing flakes over its recent decision to set up 22 model colleges across the state after the name of RSS ideologue Pandit Deendayal Upadhaya.
Ulfa publicity secretary Arunodoi Asom said this in a statement issued on Monday and also questioned the Government’s motive behind setting up an university after the name of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. The Assam Government on Monday laid in the House the Rabindranath Tagore University Bill. “The iconic leaders of Assam like Gomdhar Konwar, Pioli Phukan and many others, who had laid down their lives for Assam are yet to get their due recognition. The 855 martyrs who had sacrificed their lives for the Assam Movement are still ignored by the Government. Despite these facts, the Government’s move to set up 22 model colleges after the name of Pandit Deendayal Upadhaya, who is in no way connected to Assam, which is an insult to the iconic leaders of the State,” said the Ulfa statement.
“We warn the BJP-led Government in Assam, which came to power on the slogan of protecting the Assamese race and their land, to desist from the expansionist policy of the nation and to change the nomenclature of the school, colleges and other institutions across the State with the names of iconic leaders of the State, failing which we would be forced to take armed action against those who defy this appeal,” said the statement.
The Ulfa faction also warned the people of Assam to keep a distance from the organizations and institutions named after the ‘outsiders’ in future for the sake of safe future of their wards.
