Nagaland Govt for CBI probe into Dimapur lynching

The Nagaland Government has decided to write to the Centre for a CBI probe into the incident of March 5 jailbreak and subsequent lynching of a rape accused. Nagaland Chief Minister TR Zeliang said this on Thursday and added that a meeting of the State Cabinet had taken the decision to probe the incident by the Central investigating agency on Wednesday night at Kohima.

A mob had broken into the Central Jail in Nagaland's commercial hub Dimapur on March 5 evening and took custody of rape accused Syed Farid Khan. The mob later lynched him to death and strung his body to the Clock Tower in the town. The situation worsened in the subsequent days as curfew was clamped in the town immediately. The district administration had replaced the curfew with Section 144 CrPC later.

The Government had also put some restriction on SMSs and MMSs to control the social media like the Facebook, which was used by a section of the people to incite the mob on March 5 over the rape case. It may be mentioned here that the Nagaland Government had already arrested 55 people for their involvement in the mob that lynched the rape accused and instituted a judicial probe over the incident.

The Government had also suspended three top officials-the Deputy Commissioner, the Superintendent of the Police and the Jail Superintendent for their inability to handle the situation that led the mob to break into the jail and lynch the rape accused.
