With the crime against women increasing considerably across the country, the humble Bhot Jolokia of Assam has come to the rescue of women. Bhot Jolokia, also known as Naga chilly that grows in abundance in Assam and other Northeastern States will help the women in the country to protect them from eve-teasers as well as from miscreants.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation based in Tezpur has developed a spray made of Bhot Jolokia and the product will be available in the market soon.
“We have made the spray after a detailed research. Upon spraying, it will create skin irritation and will give burning sensation to the opponent — on whom it is sprayed. If it is sprayed in the eye, it can also make one temporarily blind for sometime. This might be useful for the women for their protection and self defence against the attempts of miscreants,” said a senior scientist of the DRDO Tezpur, who had been involved with the research team since beginning. “The spray is, however, non-lethal and eco-friendly. The spray has been titled as Capsispray,” he said, adding that a firm based in Bangalore had already been handed over the formula for commercial production and its marketing. The power of the chilly is normally measured in Scoville Heat Units (SHUs) and the Bhot Jolokia measures over a million SHU, calling it for the tag of the hottest chilly in the world until recently. The DRDO had already developed stun grenades or chilly bombs, which are being used by the BSF along the India-Bangladesh border.
like the Capsispray, the stun grenades also have stunning effect but they don’t kill anyone — once a person comes under the impact of a stun grenade blast, the resultant smoke gives him an irritation, making him blind temporarily for about half an hour. The BSF had been using stun grenades primarily to check trans-border crimes, particularly the smuggling of cattle from India to Bangladesh. The DRDO scientist further said that efforts are also on to make a gas out of the Bhot Jolokia, which can be used like tear gas to tackle particularly the mob violence like incidents which are also on the rise at least in this part of the country.
