Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Thursday met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and appealed him to ensure that the ‘Naga Peace Accord’ does not infringe upon constitutional boundary of Assam.
Gogoi met Singh at his office in North Block area in New Delhi on Thursday and said, “The Assam Government has welcomed the signing of the agreement between the NSCN (IM) and the Central Government as it would bring about peace in Nagaland and the North East as a whole. However, it would be opposed tooth and nail if the Accord infringes upon the constitutional boundary of Assam.”
“The Government of Assam has formally conveyed its protests that the Accord should not in any way harm Assam’s interests. Extension of the boundary beyond Nagaland frontier would not be tolerated under any circumstances,” Gogoi told Singh.
The Home Minister, however, assured Gogoi that there is no such development taking place and that the Central Government would take the State into confidence on any matters relating to the Naga Peace Accord.
The Assam Chief Minister further appealed Prime Minister Narendra Modi to grant Rs500 crore to meet the emergent flood situation in Assam. Apart from the Rs500 crore as immediate assistance for flood situation. Also, Gogoi urged the Prime Minister for immediate release of Rs387 crore under the National Disaster Response Fund.
“I am given to understand that the sanctioned amount for Rs387 crore under NDRF is to be adjusted against the unspent balance of the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF), which will be a grave injustice, because the unspent balance of SDRF is committed against projects already sanctioned and we, in fact, need more funds to meet the committed liabilities,” Gogoi said.
The CM also urged the PM to release the Central share of Rs257 crore against the Flood Management Programme (FMP) schemes taken up under the 11th Plan for which the State has already released its share.
