Mumbai-Pune highway mishap: Maha Govt orders State CID probe into Maratha leader Mete’s death

Taking  serious cognisance of a vociferous clamour in various quarters, the Maharashtra government on Wednesday ordered a State CID inquiry into the circumstances leading to the death of Maratha leader Vinayak Mete in a road accident on August 14. Following up on his announcement made on Sunday, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has directed the Director-General of Police to initiate measures for the CID probe into the accident three days ago.

Fifty-two year-old Mete, who was the President of Shiv Sangram Party and a face of the Maratha agitation a few years ago, was killed on the spot after his Mumbai-bound SUV rammed into another vehicle ahead on the Yeshwantrao Chavan Mumbai-Pune Expressway, early on Sunday. The SUV was on its way from Beed to Mumbai via Pune.

Shortly after the mishap, Mete’s aged mother, wife Jyoti and several leaders of the Maratha Kranti Morcha raised doubts on the circumstances leading to the mishap and  the purported delays in rushing medical help to him.

On Sunday, Shinde had asked  highway police, Raigad Police, to investigate Mete’s death.
