National Students Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of the ruling Congress, has suspended its Mumbai unit president Suraj Singh Thakur for indulging in a nude dancing in a drunken state, along with two other office-bearers, at a camp organised at Panvel in this year.
Thakur, who had been re-elected as the city NSUI president in December last, was suspended from his post on Monday, after a video footage — that showed him and other office-bearers stripping themselves and dancing in an inebriated state — was uploaded on YouTube recently.
The nude dancing was surreptitiously videotaped and uploaded on YouTube. The video footage was removed from the YouTube on Tuesday.
Informed Congress sources said that national NSUI president Rohit Chaudhary ordered the suspension of Thakur and two others, following instructions from party vice president Rahul Gandhi, for indulging in an indecent behaviour at a camp organised by Jawaharlal Nehru leadership Training Institute at a resort in Panvel in March this year.
Following the uploading of the footage, some student wing members lodged a complaint against Thakur with Rahul Gandhi, who ordered a probe into the incident. Thakur and two others were suspended after the completion of the inquiry that established the “indecent behaviour” of the city’s three NSUI office-bearers.
Thakur had come to limelight after he led protests against a book by AG Perarivalan reportedly a member of the team that assassinated Rajiv Gandhi.
