The toll in the Dockyard Road building collapse rose to 61 on Sunday, even as the city fire brigade and National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) personnel completed the debris operation at the mishap site on Sunday evening.

Those killed comprised a 3-year-old baby girl, Avani Ashok Solanki, 29 women and 31 men. Among those dead, the bodies of nine people, including three women, remained unidentified.

Of the 32 injured persons who are undergoing treatment at the JJ Hospital, the condition of two was reported to be serious.

The rescue-cum-body extrication-cum debris clearance operation, which had begun less than an hour after the four-storey BMC-owned building located on the Brahmadev Khot Marg near the Dockyard Railway station had crashed, ended at 6 pm on Sunday, with the fire brigade and NDRF personnel accounting for all those persons missing and clearing all the rubble from the mishap site.

The 33-year-old building that housed class-IV employees of the Markets and Garden departments of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), had caved in like a proverbial pack of cards on Fruday.

Twenty one families lived in the building, which had come to be categorise d as C-2 structure, which meant it was structurally weak

and needed urgent structural repairs.

The civic authorities had attributed the collapse to alterations carried out by the owner of a decorator firm, Ashok Kumar Jatansingh Mehta (45), in his office-cum-warehouse on the ground floor of the ill-fated building.

Mehta, who was on Saturday arrested on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, was produced before a holiday court, which remanded him in police custody till October 1.

Mehta and his associates have been booked under IPC Sections 304-I (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others), 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention), among others.
