Mumbai’s iconic Carnac Bridge re-named as Sindoor Bridge

Mumbai’s iconic Carnac Bridge of Mumbai — which has been re-constructed after the demolition carried out after the structure was declared undeclared “unsafe and dismantled by the Central Railway in 2022 — has been re-named after the Operation “Sindoor” in the Indian Armed forces’ recent “success” against Pakistan.

Speaking after inaugurating the reconstructed Carnac Bridge, Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said: “This Carnac Bridge will henceforth be known as Sindoor bridge”.

Incidentally, this is the first infrastructure project in India which has been named after Operation Sindoor undertaken by the Indian Armed forces to avenge the terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam.

Located near Masjid Bunder railway station in south Mumbai,  the Sindoor Flyover links P D’Mello Road to the bustling commercial areas of Crawford Market, Kalbadevi and Mohammad Ali Road.

It may be recalled that the Carnac bridge was dismantled by the Central Railway authorities in the third week of November 2022, after the 150-year-old Carnac Bridge was declared unsafe and dismantled by Central Railway in August 2022.

The newly re-constructed bridge — which is 328 meter-long and involves two steel girders, each weighing 550 metric tonnes — incorporates 70 meters within railway premises and 230 meters of approach roads.

Speaking on the occasion, Fadnavis said: “In the Amrit Mahotsav year of independence, it was imperative to close the chapters of dark history, to erase the marks of the past, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said. The renaming of Carnac Bridge was part of this vision”

“After the Pahalgam attack, the Indian Army launched Operation Sindoor, crossing into Pakistan to destroy terror camps. This demonstrated that India could strike terror havens in Pakistan. Due to this unparalleled military achievement, the municipal corporation chose to rename the bridge to Sindoor Bridge,” Fadnavis said

Apart from Fadnavis, prominent among those present at the inaugural function were: Minister for Skills, Employment, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Mangal Prabhat Lodha, Annasaheb Patil Economic Development Corporation Chairman Narendra Patil, MLC Manisha Kayande and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani.
