Mukul calls up CBI, seeks a week's time for appearance

Senior Trinamool Congress leader Mukul Roy had telephoned and mailed to the CBI making his intentions to appear before the agency sometime after January 28, sources confirming the receipt of Roy’s e-mail said.

The CBI had earlier summoned the Trinamool’s Number 2 to appear before it in connection to the Saradha chit fund probe. Roy then sought 15 day’s time while the agency allowed a week’s respite. The former Railway Minister was reportedly waiting for the outcome of the petition likely to be heard by the Surpreme Court on January 28.

The Bengal Government had filed petition seeking a Court-monitored investigation alleging the Central Government was using the CBI as a political tool to settle scores with the ruling Trinamool Congress in Bengal. The CBI sources in Kolkata acknowledged the receipt of Roy’s letters but said the final decision would be taken by the head office in Delhi.

Earlier Bengal PCC president Adhir Chowdhury had launched a scathing attack on Sibal for accepting the brief of a “corrupt” Trinamool Government “which has robbed lakhs of poor people” in Saradha chit fund case. He said that till he was the president of the State Congress unit Sibal would not be invited to any of its programmes.

Meanwhile in a related development the CBI had demanded the bills and other relevant papers from a five star hotel in Kolkata where Sudipto Sen’s Saradha group allegedly hosted parties for top Trinamool leaders besides footing the bills for their stay in the hotel.
