MPSTDC sets December 5 as final deadline for Hotel Lake View bids

MPSTDC sets December 5 as final deadline for Hotel Lake View bids

In a decisive operational reset, the Madhya Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation (MPSTDC) has fixed December 5 as the final deadline for bids to privatise Hotel Lake View Ashok, drawing a firm line under a tender cycle that has stretched across most of the year.

The state’s major asset-monetisation plan, launched in March 2025, has faced months of delays and has now been extended for the seventh time, up to December 5.

This latest shift marks the corporation’s strongest assertion yet that it expects the hospitality transition to move into execution mode without further delays.

MPSTDC Managing Director Dr Ilayaraja T told The Pioneer that no additional extensions will be allowed, positioning December 5 as the non-negotiable closure point.

The corporation expects that locking the deadline will catalyse investor commitment and eliminate the chronic drift that has slowed progress.

Hotel Lake View Ashok — a property synonymous with Bhopal’s Shyamla Hills skyline — is one of MPSTDC’s most prized but persistently loss-making assets.

With more than 60 rooms, multiple restaurants, lawns, open-air event spaces and lakefront frontage, the hotel has strong brand recall but requires substantial capital infusion and operational modernisation.

The state believes only private-sector deployment can drive the kind of revamped value proposition needed to position the property competitively in a rapidly evolving hospitality market.

Ilayaraja T confirmed that the main obstacle that repeatedly delayed the tender — a small portion of the property falling under revenue forest classification — has now been fully resolved.

The issue had created a compliance bottleneck, stalled internal approvals and forced MPSTDC to recalibrate its tender schedule multiple times.

With the matter cleared, the corporation claims it has stabilised the regulatory track and reduced friction in the decision-making workflow.

The corporation has previously announced that hotel operations will end on March 31, 2026.

However, Ilayaraja T clarified that the final operational shutdown date will depend entirely on the bids received on December 5.

This allows flexibility to align handover timelines with investor proposals, ensuring financial and logistical efficiency during the transition.

In corporate terms, MPSTDC is aiming for a clean, frictionless divestment that optimises both asset valuation and operational continuity.

The repeated extensions, though frustrating for stakeholders, also signalled strong investor curiosity and competitive intention — but the lack of regulatory clarity had kept decision cycles slow.

With all compliance issues resolved and a definitive bid deadline now locked, MPSTDC is pushing to transform intent into execution.

The upcoming tender close is expected to attract aggressive bids, particularly from hotel chains aiming to expand premium-segment footprints in central India.

Industry watchers say the location alone — perched above Upper Lake with sweeping views — offers unparalleled potential for repositioning the property as a high-yield experiential destination.

As per the tender document, the agency must pay 3 crore rupees per year, with a 5 per cent increase annually, along with a specified percentage of the hotel’s revenue. The agency that quotes the highest percentage will be awarded the tender.
