INDORE: Two accused, including the truck driver who allegedly ran over a station house officer in Madhya Pradesh's Dewas district, were seriously injured in separate police encounters on Tuesday night, an official said.
Khategaon Station House Officer (SHO) Dilip Puri had stopped a truck carrying over 1,800 litres of liquor on the Indore-Betul highway early on Monday (November 02) and attempted to question the driver. However, the driver allegedly drove the vehicle over a road divider while trying to flee, and the truck's rear wheel ran over the officer, killing him.
Dewas Superintendent of Police Aditya Mishra said the driver, Gajendra alias Akku Rawat (28), who had been absconding, was detained in Alirajpur district. While being brought to Dewas, the accused allegedly snatched a policeman's revolver in the Barotha police station area and opened fire. Police retaliated in self-defence, shooting him in one leg.
Rawat was initially admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Dewas district hospital before being shifted to Indore in critical condition, the official said.
Dewas City Superintendent of Police Sumit Agarwal said another accused, identified as Dheeraj, who was in the truck at the time of the incident, was also arrested. He allegedly attempted to escape in the Bank Note Press police station area, snatched a policeman's weapon and opened fire. He sustained a bullet injury in one leg during the police response and is currently admitted to the Dewas district hospital. (With inputs from media organisations)
