MP launches AI education programs in 53 schools

Madhya Pradesh has taken a major step towards shaping the future of its youth with the launch of Artificial Intelligence (AI) education programs in 53 Government-run Excellence for All (EFA) schools. This forward-thinking initiative aims to empower students with advanced technological skills, enhancing their employability and preparing them for the digital economy.

A collaboration between the Madhya Pradesh State Open School Education Board and tech giant Microsoft, the project integrates AI-based courses into the school curriculum. The curriculum, designed in consultation with global software companies, is tailored to introduce students to the latest technology concepts and their real-world applications. This initiative marks Madhya Pradesh as the first State in the country to implement AI education at such a scale.

PR Tiwari, Director of Madhya Pradesh State Open School, told The Pioneer that the State has been at the forefront of adopting AI in education. “We started this course around three years ago when AI was just beginning to gain traction in the country. Initially introduced in Class 8, these students have now reached Class 11,” he said. Tiwari further emphasised that the curriculum, taught by industry professionals and technology experts, provides students with hands-on learning experiences aligned with the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

The AI education program currently spans across Classes 8 to 12, and the selected 53 EFA schools include 24 girls’ schools, 16 co-educational institutions and 13 boys’ schools, spread across 38 districts. By replacing Hindi with AI in the list of optional subjects, the initiative aims to modernize the education system and provide students with critical skills to navigate future job markets.

This AI-driven education initiative is part of a broader strategy under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which seeks to introduce vocational education and technical skills into the school system. The State Government is focusing on skill-based learning to foster innovation, self-reliance and a strong workforce prepared for the demands of the digital age.

To support this transformative effort, over 54 additional AI labs are being set up across Government schools, with 25 already operational. These labs will serve as a platform for students to gain practical exposure to AI technologies. Alongside the AI education programs, the State is working on establishing IT corridors, further strengthening the infrastructure for a future-ready workforce.

With this initiative, Madhya Pradesh is setting an example for other States by seamlessly integrating AI into the school curriculum, effectively bridging the gap between academic learning and industry demands. The move is expected to enhance the quality of education and significantly improve students’ prospects in the rapidly evolving job market.
