The Madhya Pradesh High Court on Monday, October 26, reserved its order on the regular bail plea of former judicial officer Giribala Singh in the Twisha Sharma death case. Justice Ajay Kumar Nirankari concluded the hearing after arguments from Singh’s defence, the CBI and Twisha Sharma’s father. No order on the bail plea has been pronounced yet.

Singh, who has been in judicial custody for around five months, argued that she neither subjected Twisha to cruelty nor abetted her suicide. Her counsel said Singh’s remarks against Twisha over her decision to undergo an abortion were made in the heat of the moment and that she later apologised.

The CBI and Twisha’s father opposed bail, alleging that Singh had a role in the alleged cruelty and could influence the investigation or witnesses. The CBI has charged Singh under Sections 85 and 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Twisha Sharma was found dead at her matrimonial home in Bhopal on May 12, around five months after her marriage. Her family had alleged harassment and cruelty. The CBI later took over the investigation and arrested Singh and her son, Samarth Singh.

The Supreme Court has meanwhile stayed the trial proceedings in Bhopal while considering Twisha’s father’s plea seeking transfer of the case outside Madhya Pradesh. The Supreme Court has, however, allowed the bail proceedings to continue.
