The mortal remains of famous mountaineer Malli Mastan Babu reached his native village in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh on Friday, almost three weeks after he died while trying to scale a summit in Chile.
After his body reached New Delhi from Chile on Friday morning, it was flown to Chennai in a special aircraft and then driven to Gandhi Janasangam village. People who lined on both sides of the route showered flowers on his coffin as a tribute to the mountaineer who brought laurels to this region and the country.
40-year-old Mastan Babu, alumnus of IIM Calcutta, had the distinction of climbing seven summits in seven continents in the shortest period of time. But, he met with an accident while trying to scale Cerro Tres Cruces Sur, the second highest mountain of Chile and went missing. His body was found on April 3.
Andhra Pradesh Minister Palle Raghunath said that Malli Mastan Babu's last rites will be performed on Saturday with full State honours in his native village.
