Monsoon picks up in N India; other metros to get scattered showers

Published on:

While monsoon showers are likely to increase in Delhi and surroundings besides Hyderabad, the other three major cities of Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai will also receive scattered rain. There is a cyclonic circulation lying over Punjab and adjoining Haryana region even as the Western Disturbance is moving across North Pakistan region.  As per India Meterological Department (IMD), rainfall for the period from June to August had been 3 per cent below average.

According to weather scientists, the axis of the Monsoon trough is  presently running via Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and further towards Northeast India. This may cause moderate to light showers in the northern parts of the country as Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, East Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, most parts of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Northeast India.

There is also a trough extending from the cyclonic circulation over here to South Gujarat. Thus, scattered light to moderate rains are also likely over East Rajasthan and few parts of Gujarat.

Another cyclonic circulation building up over south Chhattisgarh and adjoining areas will bring good rains continue over Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, South Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.

However, the southwest monsoon is likely to start withdrawing from September 5, with a delay for four or five days, from Western Rajasthan. The normal date for the onset of the phenomenon from west Rajasthan is September 1.

The symptoms of withdrawal may start getting visible from September 5. The actual date of the same will be announced on Thursday. In 2015, the retreat of the monsoon started on September 4.  While the country is facing a deficit of three percent of rain, the IMD experts felt, that with more than a month to go--- one good spell of rain can wipe out this deficit.
