The Indian Government on Monday announced the upcoming visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Washington DC. Modi will be travelling to Unites States of America on June 25-26, 2017, at the invitation of President Donald Trump.
Modi will hold official talks with Trump on June 26. This will be the first meeting between the two leaders after Trump taking over as the new US President. ‘Their discussions will provide a new direction for deeper bilateral engagement on issues of mutual interest and consolidation of multi-dimensional strategic partnership between India and the US,” Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.
The meeting takes place in the backdrop of Trump accusing India of seeking ‘billions and billions of dollars” for signing the Paris Climate Agreement. India has denied this allegation and said it signed the pact out of its own commitment for environment and neither out of any fear or greed.
It is expected Modi will raise the issue of proposed changes in visa norms by Trump which is expected to impact Indians. Improving trade and economy will also be on agenda apart from improving defence ties.
