Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate a new terminal building for international flights at Vadodara’s Harani Airport on Saturday. Modi will also attend a function in the city where he would distribute artificial limbs and other equipment to the differently abled (Divyang) people.

Modi fought 2014 lok Sabha polls from Vadodara constituency apart from Varanasi and won with huge margin of over five lakh votes from the cultural capital of Gujarat. later on, he opted to continue as Varanasi MP and decided to vacate Vadodara seat.

Following BJP’s historical victory in the 2014 polls, Modi decided to give victory speech from the city. Since then this would be the first visit to the city. Although, he visited other parts of State four times. In the last month he came twice.

The new terminal building constructed at a cost of `160 core at Vadodara is part of an exercise to modernise existing airport by the Central Government, said a senior official of Airport Authority of India (AAI), adding that the idea is to develop the airports at par with the international standards. Harni airport is spread over 18,120 sq mt and can handle 700 passengers (domestic plus international) per hour and has 18 check-in counters.

The steel structure of the new terminal has been designed as per the Advance Building Management System. It has hi-tech security systems, energy-saving cooling mechanism, rainwater harvesting set up and super sensitive fire safety alarm, Mohapatra said. Currently, 10 flights operate per day from the Harni airport.

Meanwhile, Modi would also attend a program for the differently abled people (Divyang) in Vadodara city. In the function nearly 8,000 Divyangs will be given kits which would help them to become self-reliant.

The function is organised by the union ministry for social justice and empowerment.
