Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday during a telephonic conversation with his Australian counterpart Malcolm Turnbull took up the issue of recent changes in the Aussie visa regime.
Modi mentioned about the visa issue when Turnbull called him up to thank for the success of his recent visit to India. During the conversation, Modi expressed concern over the possible impact of the recent changes in Australian regulations for the skilled professionals’ visa programme. The two Prime Ministers agreed that officials from both sides will remain in close touch on the issue. They also discussed the follow-up action taken after the visit of Turnbull to India last month, and the steps required to further strengthen the bilateral relationship.
Australia had last month announced major changes in its migrant worker visa policy and scrapped that 457 Visa programme that was used by over 95,000 temporary foreign workers as Turnbull pushed for ‘Australia first’ to tackle the growing unemployment in the country.
