Addressing election rallies in Daltonganj and Manika on Sunday, Congress president Sonia Gandhi attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that the BJP could go down to any extent like making false promises to the people to get their votes and come to power.

The Congress president also reiterated that that the Congress is the only party which has fought for all sections of the society and cautioned the people of Jharkhand against getting into the trap laid by the BJP.

“Prime Minster Narendra Modi wants to run the Government banking on sermons delivered by him which can go to any extent for the lust of power. The BJP has always put the people of this country into problems,” she said on the last day of electioneering for the first phase of polls covering 13 constituencies.

Sonia also asked what the BJP has done for the people during its tenure in the State. “Jharkhand was ruled for maximum period by the BJP but no school, college or hospitals were raised by it,” she said. Sonia held the “anti-people policies” of the BJP responsible for the underdevelopment of Jharkhand.

Furthermore, she also alleged that the funds allocated by the Congress party during its rule could not be utilised by the BJP governments in Jharkhand. Thousands of crores of money meant for the development of the State remained unutilised. “You will be surprised to know the funds allocated for the implementation of the policies for the development of Jharkhand did not reach you due to the negligence of the BJP Government in the State,” said Sonia.

Calling the problem of Naxalism a repercussion of underdevelopment in the State, Sonia Gandhi said that her party has been in favour looking at it from a social prospective. “The BJP has promoted Naxalism in the State for self-interest,” she said.

Sonia also attacked the Modi Government at the Centre for not implementing any development work initiated by the Congress party. “The BJP Government has failed to implement developmental policies initiated by the Congress party,” she said.

Reiterating that the Congress party will continue its fight for the rights of the people and work for the development of the State, Sonia also promised to take care of agriculture, power, water and education in the State if the Congress comes to power.

“The Congress is a party standing for the aspirations of the people which has always fought for their rights. The Congress believes in taking all sections of society forward, we have worked for the empowerment of Dalits, tribals, backward and minority classes, women folk and other weaker sections of the society and will do so in the future as well. I salute this land of freedom-fighters and hard working people,” said Sonia.

She also appealed to the people of Jharkhand to cast their ballot in favour of her party for a strong Government in the State. The first phase of the five-phased polling in Jharkhand will be held on Tuesday. The counting of votes will take place on December 23.
