In the second consecutive incident of militants facing public wrath, a group of irate people in Assam’s Dima Hasao district have killed one cadre of the Dima Hasao National Army (DHNA), a newly floated militant outfit, and injured two other cadres of the outfit. Dima Hasao Superintendent of Police GV Sivaprasad Ganjala confirmed this on Monday and said that the incident took place as an outburst of people’s anger over the militants, who had been indulging in extortion in the district.
He said that the incident took place on Sunday at the remote Thongikro Village under Maibong Police Station in the district. A group of four youths came to the village when the villagers are celebrating the Bishu Dima festival and had an altercation with the villagers. locals said that one of the youths also had a pistol, the SP said. “The villagers got angry and beat the youths. While one of them died on the spot, two others were injured,” the SP said while adding that one of the militants, however, managed to escape.
“It’s an interior place and takes more than four hours to reach the spot from Maibong. We have deployed security personnel in the area so that there cannot be retaliation by the militants on the innocent civilians,” he said. It may be mentioned here that five cadres of the anti-talk faction of the National democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) were beaten up severely by an angry mob at Baksa district in Assam’s Bodoland Territorial Areas Districts (BTAD) on Friday night. Police said that the five had gone there to extortion money, when the locals were busy in some function. All the five militants were handed over to the police by the civilians.
