MlA gets threat for commenting on Rohingya infiltration issue

Assam’s BJP legislator Shiladitya Dev has said that he has received life threats from some elements from outside the country.

The threat came to the fore on Wednesday after the BJP legislator from Hindu-Bengali dominated Hojai constituency lodged an FIR with the local police saying that he has received two phone calls threatening him with dire consequences.

The calls came after the BJP legislator became vocal against the Bengali speaking Muslims in Assam, particularly those living in char areas (riverine sandbars) of the State and claiming that the Rohingyas are infiltrating into Assam through Tripura.

“I received two calls — one from United Kingdom and the other from Philippines — on Tuesday. Both the callers warned me to stop speaking against the Rohingyas and the Bengali-speaking Muslims or face the consequences. So, I brought the matter to the notice of the police by lodging an FIR with them today (on Wednesday),” Dev said.

Dev was recently very vocal against the Bengali speaking Muslims, particularly those living in char areas of Assam and said that the char areas of the State have become breeding ground of terrorism. he had also stated that the Assam Government had been wasting money in the name of development of char areas. Besides, he had also stated that the Rohingyas were entering southern Assam’s Barak Valley from Tripura. He alleged that the left Front Government in Tripura was pushing them into Assam to gain political mileage.

“In some discourse on social networking site, I had pointed out that the Bengali-speaking Muslims cannot claim to be original inhabitants of Assam as most of them are Bangladeshis originally. I also said that the country was divided on the basis of religion.

As they have already taken a Country on their own, they have no right to claim the status of original inhabitants in Assam,” Dev said.
